The first groom sets the tone

Most dogs who hate the groomer learned it early. A loud room, a cage dryer, strangers holding them still, all of it at once, on the first visit. After that every appointment is a fight.
We do the opposite. Your puppy is the only dog on our table, because every appointment we run is cage free dog grooming. We let them see and hear the tools before we use them, we work in short stretches, and we stop and reset if they get worried. The first visit is deliberately easy: bath, dry, nails, a tidy around the eyes and paws. If that goes well, we do more next time.
Our groomers have more than 7 years of experience and introduce puppies to grooming the slow way, because a puppy who is comfortable at 4 months is an easy dog to groom at 4 years. Barky Lounge offers Miami pet grooming from our Edgewater salon, open 7 days.
What Happens at Your Puppy's First Groom
Short, calm and in this order. We stop early if your puppy has had enough, and tell you why.

- Warm bath with a gentle shampoo
- Blow dry at low speed, introduced slowly, never a cage dryer
- Brush out so they get used to being handled
- Dog nail trim, a few at a time if needed
- Ear cleaning
- Light face trim around the eyes, plus a tidy of the paws and sanitary area
- A full report at pick up on how they coped and what to work on at home

Puppies are priced by size and coat like any other dog. A first visit is usually a bath, which starts at $50. A full puppy cut is priced as a full dog grooming service, from $70.

Note: A nail trim on its own is a good way to introduce a nervous puppy to the salon before booking a full appointment. It takes a few minutes and we welcome it as a walk in when there is space.

How old does my puppy need to be?
Once they have had their rabies vaccination. Many owners wait for the full vaccination course, which is sensible, but earlier short visits help a lot if your vet is happy with it.
What vaccinations do you require?
A current rabies vaccination for every dog. Please send or bring the record before the appointment.
Should my puppy get a haircut on the first visit?
Usually not. A bath, dry and light tidy is enough for a first visit. It keeps the appointment short and gives your puppy a good first experience to build on.
How long does a puppy groom take?
Shorter than an adult groom, often an hour to 90 minutes for a bath and tidy. We would rather end early than push a puppy too far. For adult dogs, see how long a full dog groom takes.
What if my puppy is frightened?
We slow down, take breaks, and if they have had enough we stop and tell you what we got done. Pushing through makes the next visit harder, which is the opposite of the point. If your puppy seems a little off afterwards, read why dogs act weird after grooming.
How often should a puppy be groomed?
