Anal Gland Expression for Dogs in Miami, FL

Anal glands sit either side of the anus and empty naturally when a dog passes a firm stool. Most dogs never need help with them. Some, often smaller breeds and dogs on softer diets, do not empty them fully and need them expressed.

We do it by request, externally, as part of a dog bath appointment or full groom visit. We do not do it on every dog as standard, because expressing glands that do not need it can irritate the area and some vets argue it makes the problem more likely over time, not less.

Important: we do external expression only, which is what a groomer does. If your dog's glands are impacted, infected or abscessed, that needs a vet, and internal expression is a veterinary procedure. If your dog is scooting regularly, licking at the area, or seems sore, book the vet first and the groom after. Tell us when you book at our Edgewater salon. Barky Lounge is a pet groomer in Miami on NE 18th Street.

How It Works at Barky Lounge

  • You tell us at booking or at drop off that you want it done
  • Done externally during the bath, before the dry
  • Area cleaned thoroughly afterwards, and tidied with a sanitary trim service if needed
  • We tell you what we found, including if nothing came out
  • If the area looks red, swollen or sore, we stop and tell you to see a vet
  • We do not do internal expression, that is veterinary work

Not included by default in the Luxury Bath Service or Full Groom Service. Ask and we will do it.

Anal Gland Expression in Miami, Frequently Asked Questions

Do you do it on every dog?

No. By request only. Most dogs never need it, and doing it unnecessarily can cause irritation.

Is it included in a groom?

It is available with any bath or full groom when you ask for it. Mention it at booking or at drop off. See what a standard dog groom includes.

Do you do internal expression?

No. That is a veterinary procedure. We do external expression only.

My dog keeps scooting. Will this fix it?

Possibly, but scooting has several causes including worms, allergies and itchy skin. If it is happening regularly, see a vet before booking a groom.

Can having it done too often cause problems?

Many vets think so. The glands should empty naturally, and routine expression on a dog who does not need it can irritate the area.

My vet said my dog needs them done regularly. Can you?

Yes. Tell us at booking and we will do it at every visit.
